Can my dog eat French fries?
Having a cheeseburger without crispy chips is pretty much a blasphemy. Before giving french fries for your dog to eat, consider some of the following things.
Is fried potatoes safe for dogs to eat?
The fries, they really are not good for dogs to eat. Potato chips are not immediately toxic or dangerous, but they are not healthy in any way.French fries are loaded with saturated and trans fats, which are bad for those who consume them. Too much fat in a dog’s diet, either at one time or over time, can lead to a very painful inflammation of the pancreas. While a lot of salt in your diet makes your blood pressure rise or cause the retention of a lot of water, the salt reacts a bit differently in dogs.
Many potato chips can lead to salt poisoning
Dogs that get too much salt can actually go down with salt poisoning. It does not look too dangerous, but it’s actually quite serious. To much salt launches the very specific electrolyte balance of the body. Because of this imbalance, salt poisoning can permanently damage your dog’s kidneys.
Kidney damage is rarely reversible and usually progresses as dogs age, so even if the initial damage is not too severe, it can worsen as time goes by. Salt poisoning can also lead the dogs to coma or even kill them. Symptoms usually begin with vomiting and diarrhea and loss of appetite.
Some dogs can walk as if they are drunk, and most will seem as if they can not drink enough. If poisoning is allowed to progress, fluid will accumulate in the body because the body begins to retain water. Depending on how electrolytes are unbalanced or dehydrating the dog, seizures may occur.
Treatment requires the intervention of a veterinarian. Your dog will need to be hospitalized and receive intravenous fluids and a mixture of electrolytes to help balance the body again. The blood will have to be monitored periodically to see how the electrolytes are recovering and the dog can not go home until the blood returns to normal.
Remember that there are some household items that contain large amounts of salt. These include homemade pasta, paint balls, stone salt and even enemas. If salt is a primary ingredient, make sure it is stored away from where your dog can not reach it.
French fries can create soup kitchens
When you go on vacation and eat a ton of fast food, you come home and suddenly your healthy meals are no longer as good. The same phenomenon happens to your dog when you give lots of tasty treats. Eventually, they’d rather expect you to throw quick fatty foods instead of eating your typical meal. This can be a very difficult habit to break; some dogs may spend days with virtually no food, as they desperately ask for their table scraps.
Many dogs enter the veterinary clinic with a lot of excess weight because their owners are convinced that their dog can starve if they stop giving them human food. It is best to avoid creating this habit because it is very difficult to break.
When feeding your dog with some chips from time to time and it will not cause any problem, but giving crisps consistently will create a variety of health problems. Save fast food for yourself and give your dog healthier choices.
